to the attention of Baerbel Saefkow, German Peace Council, and Alfred Marder and Henry Lowendorf, US Peace Council
Dear comrades
I write you on behalf of Peace Association, Turkey, of which I'm the general coordinator. I am also CC member of the CP of Turkey.
You know that the Turkish government applied recently to NATO for setting patriot "defense" system, i.e. missiles to be used mainly against Syria. This is a serious escalation in the region.
This demand that will surely be satisfied via Germany but possibly via US or Netherlands, will complete in fact the recent step towards NATO radar installation in Malatya, Kürecik. And to be sure all the system including radar and missiles will be ready to be used against any Middle East country.
We propose to take a common action together with the peace organizations. We are aware that in Germany there is a strong opposition against such a step from German side. A common statement may be the first step, others to be discussed and planned together.
This is just a preliminary idea that we have to behave very quickly.
I have contacted with WPC. Iraklis Tsavdaridis has expressed the institutional support of WPC. Unfortunately we and WPC have no contact with Netherlands peace movement.
We are just this weekend organizing in the Syrian border city or Turkey, Antioch, a peace conference with the participation of WPC and some member organizations. I think it would be very meaningful that you send messages to us, dealing with this dark initiaitive of Turkey and NATO.
Thank you, expecting to hear from you soon
Aydemir Güler
