Turkey and Crimea: the politicised results of a single mission

Alexander GRIGORIEV | 26.06.2015 | 00:00

Zafer Üskül, the head of the unofficial Turkish delegation that visited the Republic of Crimea at the end of April, has shared some of his thoughts with the Anadolu Agency. The Turkish professor’s report contained a number of harsh accusations against the Russian authorities, which he believes are systematically violating the rights of those living on the peninsula. This refers to an alleged violation of citizens’ language, property and personal rights. The findings have apparently been made on the basis of discussions with a wide range of people, and the text produced as a result of the visit was handed to Vladimir Putin by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during a recent meeting between the Russian and Turkish presidents in Baku.
The contents of this document will most likely be widely publicised and creatively developed during the II World Congress of Crimean Tatars set to take place in Ankara between 31 July and 2 August. The decision to hold the congress was made at the beginning of April following a meeting of Crimean Tatar organisations in Turkey unable to ignore the views of their host country’s authorities.
As you know, attempts by Kiev, as well as the US and the European Union, to play the Crimean Tatar card has a fairly long history, but has not yet produced the desired result. All the same, during his visit to Ukraine in March, President Erdogan stated the need for the Crimean Tatar’s situation to be constantly monitored and the willingness of Ankara to continue including the issue on their agenda not just within the framework of bilateral contacts, but in any international format.
In the same month, a Turkish delegation visited Crimea that included the deputy mayors of a number of cities, as well as business and community leaders: the first guests representing the official authorities of a foreign state to visit Russian Crimea. Recently, however, statements by Turkish leaders have been sailing close to the wind. Commenting on Vladimir Putin’s visit to Yerevan on 24 April 2015, for example, Mr. Erdogan sharply criticised Russia’s policy in Ukraine and Crimea, going so far as to compare it with the actions of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in Kuwait.
Nevertheless, with a desire to develop friendly and good-neighbourly relations with Turkey based on the utmost respect for the interests of its partner, Russia cooperated with the requests of its southern neighbour interested in the situation on the peninsula. The request for a monitoring mission to visit Crimea was granted, and granted without any kind of trade-off such as a request for a similar Russian group to visit the unofficial capital of Turkish Kurdistan, Diyarbakır. The unofficial (and this word is worth emphasising) Turkish delegation made up of scientists, human rights activists, retired deputies from the Justice and Development Party and academics from several universities, the declared aim of which was to monitor the situation of the Crimean Tatars in Crimea, travelled from Kiev to Simferopol through Moscow on 27 April and stayed on the peninsula until 30 April.
During their three-day stay in the autonomous region, members of the delegation held meetings with public authorities, including the leaders of the Qirim movement and the Mufti of Crimea. Naturally they also had to have dinner with representatives of the so-called Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People. The head of this de jure non-existent organisation, Refat Chubarov, stated that «the Turkish government agreed the international and legal aspects of the visit beforehand with the president of Ukraine» and «the possibility of sending a Turkish delegation, the goals, objectives and reporting of its work was discussed with the national leader of the Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Dzhemilev, and the chairman of the Mejlis». According to the first deputy chairman of the Mejlis, Nariman Dzhelyal, the Turkish delegation was told about human rights violations in Crimea, including the infringement of the rights of Crimean Tatars. After commenting that «for someone visiting Crimea and walking around the streets of Crimea’s towns and cities, it would seem on the surface that everything is normal, people are working, there are Crimean Tatars running businesses and so on», Dzhelyal countered this with some vague fears and concerns. All of this was repeated in full to the head of the monitoring mission, who also complained that he had allegedly been pressured.
Mr. Üskül’s public statements have not been ignored by the Russian Foreign Ministry, which has consistently been working on strengthening relations between Russia and Turkey. However, it seems that not every representative of Turkey’s political elite understands that any dialogue is a two-way street. «The opinions expressed by the head of the delegation cannot but cause regret and disappointment. An emphasis was placed on negative aspects alone that are untrue and based on information obtained from private conversations with persons who can hardly voice the opinion of the majority of Crimean Tatars», noted the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department. «We are surprised that after visiting the peninsula, the delegation members still failed to see anything positive. It is absolutely clear that the head of the delegation offered a lopsided presentation of the facts, which was evidently performed as a result of external pressure», said the Russian Foreign Ministry.
However, this «lopsided presentation» is completely understandable if you fully appreciate the destructive position of the kind of people Mr. Üskül spoke to such as the leaders of the self-proclaimed Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, which has absolutely no kind of legal political status. It should be remembered that long-standing problems of the Crimean Tatars like the land issue were never resolved in the many years that Crimea was part of Ukraine in favour of short-term ambitions and self-serving interests. More importantly, attempts by Mustafa Dzhemilev and Refat Chubarov, frequent guests not just in Washington and Europe but Ankara as well, to drag the Crimean Tatars into their extremely dangerous political games fraught with interethnic conflicts have alienated the vast majority of their own people. Attempted acts of provocation on Crimea’s borders have finally placed the Mejlis’ activities beyond the reach of Russian legislation. The display of self-exposure was completed by the public joy in connection with Kiev’s attempts to organise energy, water and other blockades against Crimea (including the Tatar population, of course, the object of Kiev’s demagogic ‘concern’). Incidentally, for some reason Kiev’s closure of the North Crimean Canal, which affected a large number of Crimean Tatar farmers, did not give rise to any angry statements from the Turkish Foreign Ministry...
At present, despite illegal sanctions and systemic financial and economic pressure, the Crimean government is taking steps aimed at creating a safe environment for conducting business, including by Turkish businessmen. Issues such as the preservation of national culture and language are gradually being resolved. This is in keeping with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations between Russia and Turkey in trade, economic and humanitarian spheres, although the specific interest in «human rights violations» in Crimea is hindering this constructive work. By a strange coincidence, it acquired new dimensions right after the national and government status of the autonomy changed following the results of the national referendum held on 16 March 2014 in full accordance with international law.
It should be noted here that the practice of holding referendums is not something unknown, including in the history of the Turkish Republic. On 2 September 1939, for example, the national assembly of the Sanjak of Alexandretta, located within what was the French Mandate of Syria, proclaimed the independent Republic of Hatay. Sometime later, following a national referendum, Hatay became a Turkish vilayet, resulting in the exodus of many Arabs and Armenians (and it should be noted in brackets that these numbered far more than the amount of Crimean Tatars who resettled in Ukraine after March 2014).
The threat (explicit or imaginary) to the Turkish minority in Cyprus laid the foundations for the occupation of a significant proportion of the island by Turkish forces, resulting in numerous casualties, flows of refugees and the start of a long-standing conflict that is still going on today. And what Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, either at the suggestion of his friends from NATO or the leaders of the Mejlis, refers to as «the annexation of Crimea» also passed peacefully, if you don’t count those Crimeans who became the victims of Maidan militants near the Korsun Cherkasy region and the victims of several acts of provocation directly within the autonomy itself...
But let us leave aside the peculiar nuances of each specific case and look more closely at the unmistakable harm being caused by the use of double standards when it comes to establishing genuine good-neighbourly relations. As you know, the «zero problems with neighbours» policy announced by Ahmet Davutoğlu has failed in recent years. Clearly a Russian-Turkish dialogue, which will almost certainly continue to be subjected to systemic pressure linked to the desire of the authorities of the neighbouring state to develop comprehensive ties with the Russian Black Sea regions (by no means as much as with Crimea) will be rather complex.
Moscow understands the complexity of the dilemma facing Turkish politicians, although everyone needs to resolve their own problems based on their own understanding of their national interests. Pragmatic and responsible partners have to choose what is more important to them: the irresponsible escapades of self-proclaimed «national leaders» (even if they do have a kindred language and Turkish medals in parade photographs) or the stable and progressive development of relations with a country like Russia.

Turkey’s Troubling War on Syria

EDITOR'S CHOICE | 26.06.2015 | 09:40

The June 7 parliamentary election in Turkey could have a huge impact on the conflict in Syria. The invincible image of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been cracked. There is a real chance that the election might lead to substantive change in Turkish foreign policy promoting the war in Syria.
Even though Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) won the most votes, they lost their majority in parliament and must now find a coalition partner, as Turkey’s new parliament was seated for the first time on June 23. Now begins the political bargaining and negotiations to form a governing coalition.
Depending on the outcome, Turkey may stop or seriously restrict the flow of weapons and foreign fighters through its territory into Syria. If Turkey does this, it would offer a real prospect for movement toward negotiations and away from war in Syria. Why? The Syrian war continues because Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the U.S., France, the UK and others are spending billions of dollars annually to fund the armed opposition and sustain the war in violation of the UN Charter and international law.
Closely allied with Qatar and the Muslim Brotherhood, Turkey has been the primary path for weapons and foreign fighters in Syria. ISIS has depended on export of oil and import of weapons and fighters through Turkey.  Al Qaeda’s Jabhat al Nusra, Ahrar al Sham and other armed opposition groups have depended on weapons and foreign fighters coming in via Turkey for attacks on northern Syria including Syria’s largest city, Aleppo.
The following examples show the extent of Turkish involvement in the war on Syria:
–Turkey hosts the Political and Military Headquarters of the armed opposition. Most of the political leaders are former Syrians who have not lived there for decades.
–Turkey provides home base for armed opposition leaders. As quoted in the Vice News video “Syria: Wolves of the Valley”: “Most of the commanders actually live in Turkey and commute in to the fighting when necessary.”
–Turkey’s intelligence agency MIT has provided its own trucks for shipping huge quantities of weapons and ammunition to Syrian armed opposition groups. According to court testimony, they made at least 2,000 trips to Syria.
–Turkey is suspected of supplying the chemical weapons used in Ghouta in August 2013 as reported by Seymour Hersh here. In May 2013, Nusra fighters were arrested in possession of sarin but quickly and quietly released by Turkish authorities.
–Turkey’s foreign minister, top spy chief and senior military official were secretly recordedplotting an incident to justify Turkish military strikes against Syria. A sensational recording of the meeting was publicized, exposing the plot in advance and likely preventing it from proceeding.
–Turkey has provided direct aid and support to attacking insurgents. When insurgents attacked Kassab Syria on the border in spring 2014, Turkey provided backup military support and ambulances for injured fighters. Turkey shot down a Syrian jet fighter that was attacking the invading insurgents. The plane landed 7 kilometers inside Syrian territory, suggesting that Turkish claims it was in Turkish air space are likely untrue.
–Turkey has recently increased its coordination with Saudi Arabia and Qatar. This has led to the recent assaults by thousands of foreign fighters on Idlib and Jisr al Shugour in northern Syria. Armed with advanced weaponry including TOW missiles, and using suicide bomb vehicles, the armed groups overran Syrian armed forces defending both cities. The assaults were facilitated by Turkey jamming and disrupting Syrian radio communications.
–Turkey has facilitated travel into northern Syria by extremist mercenaries from all parts of the globe including Chechen Russians, Uyghur Chinese, Europeans, North Africans, South Asians including Indonesians and Malaysians. The assault on Jisr al Shugour was spearheaded byChinese Uyghur fighters and suicide bombers crossing over from Turkey with tanks and heavy artillery.
–Turkey itself has provided steady supply of recruits to the Islamic State. Like other countries which have had citizens indoctrinated with Wahhabi fanaticism, they have done little or nothing to limit the indoctrination or restrict emigration for ‘jihad’.
–Finally, Turkey has permitted the supply of huge quantities of car bomb ingredients (ammonium nitrate fertilizer) to the Islamic State. On May 4, the New York Times reportedthese shipments at the Turkish border. Sixteen days later ISIS overran Ramadi in an assault that began with 30 car bombs with ten reportedly the size of the Oklahoma City bombing.
–As part of its continuing effort to draw the U.S. and NATO into direct participation in the war on Syria, Turkey is an active player in various propaganda campaigns. For example, the “White Helmets” or “Syrian Civil Defence” are trained and supplied in Turkey. Some of the videos purportedly from Syria are likely filmed in Turkey at their training site. White Helmets and Syrian Civil Defence are both creations of the West and join with Turkey in calling for a “No Fly Zone.”
Turkish Repression
The AKP government has vigorously tried to suppress information about the extent of Turkey’s support of the war on Syria. They have resorted to repression and intimidation such as:
–Turkish authorities have charged four regional prosecutors with attempting to topple the government. Their “crime” was to insist on the inspection of four trucks headed from Turkey to Syria. The trucks contained weapons and ammunition in violation of Turkish law. The trial of the four prosecutors is ongoing, 18 months after the inspection.
–Turkish authorities arrrested seven high ranking military officers over the inspection of trucks taking weapons and fighters to Syria.
–Turkish authorities banned social media and news outlets from reporting on arms shipments through Turkey to Syria. Twitter and Facebook accounts that talked about the shipments where shut down. Erdogan went on to threaten to “eradicate” Twitter.
–Turkish President Erdogan threatened two life-term sentences for the editor of Hurriyet daily newspaper for publicizing support of the armed opposition in Syria by Turkey’s intelligence agency MIT.
–A whistle-blowing MIT (intelligence agency) officer who opposed the agency’s collusion with terrorism in Syria was arrested, convicted and imprisoned. After two years he managed to escape and tell his story. The blockbuster account was broadcast on Turkey’s OdaTV and later translated into English and published here.
Was an American Journalist Murdered?
As seen in the examples above, Turkish AKP authorities have aggressively tried to suppress information on the involvement in Syria. If they have been that aggressive with Turkish journalists, prosecutors and military officers, how far might they go against a foreign journalist working for Iran’s Press TV?
The American-born journalist Serena Shim died just days after she documented the use ofWorld Food Program trucks to transport foreign fighters to the border with Syria and into ISIS territory. After learning that Turkish intelligence was looking for her, Serena Shim was so concerned that she expressed her fear on television.
Two days later, Serena Shim’s car was hit head-on by a cement truck. The driver of the cement truck disappeared but was later found. There are many discrepancies about what happened. The first reports indicated the truck and driver left without stopping. Then the driver and truck were located, and then photos appeared showing a collision.
While some Turkish security services have preemptively exonerated the driver of the cement truck, the local prosecutor has filed charges against the driver, accusing him of causing death through negligence. There are many suspicious aspects, not least is the fact that the cement truck’s wheels are angled toward the car, not away as one would expect with a vehicle trying to avoid collision.
The death of American journalist Serena Shim, and her factual investigative reporting on Syria and Turkey, stands in sharp contrast with the sensational media accounts about the “kidnapping” of NBC reporter Richard Engel. That event turned out to be a hoax contrived by “rebels” to manipulate American political opinion.
With the complicity of individual reporters and mainstream media, the fraud was successful. The bias in mainstream western media is further demonstrated by the almost complete media silence about the death of Serena Shim and her important journalistic work.
Turkey’s Election
For the past 13 years, Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) has had majority control of Turkey’s parliament. In the recent election, AKP’s share of the popular voted plummeted 10 percent and they lost their parliamentary majority. The results are a clear rebuff to Erdogan and AKP policies.
Sixty percent of voters went against AKP, splitting the vote among the three alternative parties. The pro-Kurdish and Leftist People’s Democratic Party (HDP) burst onto the scene capturing 13 percent of the votes and equaling the number of parliamentary seats captured by the rightist and anti-Kurdish National Movement Party (MHP). The main opposition party is the social democratic Republican Peoples Party (CHP) with 26 percent of the vote.
Over the coming weeks, AKP will try to form a coalition government with one or more of the alternate parties.  However it won’t be easy. The natural bedfellow would be the anti-Kurdish and rightist MHP but they are demanding the resumption of a corruption trial against AKP leaders including Erdogan’s son Bilal. That trial would probably lead back to President Erdoganhimself so it seems unlikely AKP will ally with MHP.
The three alternative parties could form a coalition to govern without AKP, but it’s hard to imagine the staunchly anti-Kurdish MHP allying with the pro-Kurdish HDP. If a majority coalition cannot be formed within 45 days, the Turkish constitution requires a rerun of the election.
Even with severe repression and intimidation, the Turkish public is aware of Turkey’s policy supporting war on Syria. One consequence of the war has been almost 2 million immigrant refugees with the dispersal of many throughout Turkey, providing cheap labor and adding significantly to the unemployment problem.
In addition, there have been terrorist attacks in the border region and an escalation of corruption and repression as external money and weapons have flooded the area en route to Syria. The war against Syria has been widely unpopular and played a significant role in the election.
–All the opposition parties called for change in Turkey’s foreign policy.
–Criticism of Erdogan and Davutoglu’s policy even comes from within the AKP membership: “Many believe that one reason for the AKP’s dismal showing in the 2015 elections is its policy on Syria.”
–The head of the main opposition party (CHP) says Turkey will start controlling the border and stop the flood of arms and fighters into Syria.
The coming weeks will indicate how Turkey moves forward: Will AKP manage to form a coalition government with one of the opposition parties? Or will there be another election?
Will Turkey start enforcing the border and stop shipments of arms to the armed opposition as demanded by the leader of the main opposition party? This would be a huge change in the dynamics within Syria. Without a rear base of constant and steady support, the armed opposition would be forced to rely on its own resources rather than those of foreign governments. This armed opposition would quickly wither since they have very little support base within Syria.
Since the election, there are already signs of a shift in the balance. Kurdish forces recently captured ISIS’ important border crossing at Tal Abyad. This has been the main route of weapons, fighters and supplies between Turkey and the Islamic State’s ‘capital’ at Raqqa in eastern Syria.
Past Year and the Future
Thirteen months ago, it looked like the war in Syria was starting to move toward resolution. The last remaining armed opposition in the “capital of the revolution” Homs reached reconciliation and withdrew from the Old City of Homs in May 2014. On June 3, 2014, the election in Syria confirmed substantial support for the government.
Since then, we have seen dramatic changes. On June 10, 2014, ISIS surged through western Iraq and captured the city of Mosul and huge quantities of American armaments including tanks, rockets, humvees, etc. That led to the creation of the “Islamic State” and expansion in eastern Syria including Tabqa Air Base where hundreds of Syrian soldiers and ISIS fighters died.
This past spring saw the coalescing of numerous foreign and Islamist groups into the Jaish al Fatah (Army of Conquest) supported by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. With high-powered TOW anti-tank missiles and thousands of shock troops they were able to overtake both Idlib and Jisr al Shugour near the Turkish border.
ISIS and the Army of Conquest are both dependent on the Turkish supply line. If that is closed off or seriously restricted, it will dramatically change the situation. With the prospect of losing the base of support in Turkey, will the opposition try something desperate to draw the U.S. and NATO into the conflict directly?
The Turkish people have indicated they want to stop their government’s war on Syria. If their will is respected, it should lead to restricting and stopping the foreign funding and promotion of the conflict. If Turkey stops the flood of weapons and foreign fighters into northern Syria, it will be following instead of violating international law. This will give peace a chance in Syria.

Helga Fuchs

Fascism On The Rise - Not Only in Ukraine

America’s White Supremacists At Home and Abroad

Finian CUNNINGHAM | 23.06.2015 | 00:00

Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old killer who shot dead nine African American worshippers in a bible study class, is a self-declared Neo-Nazi white supremacist. Photographs and writings from his social media websites show the young white man revelling in racial hatred and paying homage to the Apartheid regimes of former South Africa and the German Third Reich. Roof foretold in blood-curdling words how he was going to «save the white race» by carrying out his act of mass murder in the African American church in Charleston, South Carolina. In other words, this American Nazi would be right at home in the company of the paramilitary armies that the US-backed Kiev regime has unleashed in Ukraine.
In Ukraine, the American media have played down the facts of the Neo-Nazi and white supremacist «volunteer brigades» that have launched a terror war on the ethnic Russian population since April 2014. As American journalist Robert Parry has extensively pointed out, the US media, led by the so-called newspaper of record, the New York Times, have wilfully ignored the reality of the Ukrainian Neo-Nazi paramilitaries. Even though these brigades are an integral part of the Kiev regime’s fighting force in east Ukraine and even though these paramilitary foot soldiers and their commanders openly espouse Neo-Nazi slogans, white supremacist views, and Third Reich regalia and insignia – the American, and Western media generally, have declined to report on the grim reality of these Ukrainian regime forces and their criminality against ethnic Russian civilians.
Since the Western-backed Kiev regime launched its so-called «anti-terror operation»on the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, more than 6,000 people have been killed. Most the victims have been innocent civilians, women, and children. Over a million people have been displaced from their homes because of the violence, a violence which has reignited in recent weeks and threatens to sweep away the shaky ceasefire that was brokered in February 2015 by Russia, Germany and France.
The Kiev regime’s so-called volunteer battalions never recognised the putative ceasefire anyway, and they are accused of fomenting the ongoing low-intensity warfare. These battalions, with names such as Azov, Donbass, Dneipr, Tornado, operate with the full knowledge of the Kiev regime’s ministry of interior, headed by Arsen Avakov. They are accused of a litany of crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, kidnapping and arson.
The military commander of the Azov battalion is Andriy Biletsky, who is also a member of the coup-installed parliament in Kiev. Like his cadres, Biletsky is a self-declared Neo-Nazi who adulates the Ukrainian storm troopers that collaborated with the Waffen SS during the Second World War in the mass extermination of millions of fellow Ukrainians, Poles, Jews, and Russians.
Biletsky is also a proud white supremacist who rails against «negroes» and «immigrant hordes» who are infecting the biological purity of Europeans. He sees it has his duty to»lead the white races of the world» out of this contamination from «Jews, Muslims, blacks» and other «untermenschen» (subhumans). Not unlike the mission that the Charleston killer Dylann Roof also professed.
On rare occasions, the Western media have lifted the lid on the vile reality of the Kiev regime. With the regime’s paramilitaries waving Nazi-era flags and wearing SS insignia on their uniforms, it would be hard to not admit, at least occasionally, this glaring contingency. In an earlier rare report, Britain’s Daily Telegraph commented that Kiev’s battalions were «openly white supremacist».
Most of the Western media coverage, however, has served to conceal the disturbing development of Western governments supporting a regime whose military power relies on Nazi-adulating brigades. Incongruously, the Western media have sought to expedite their cover-up by claiming that the Neo-Nazi labels are «only Kremlin propaganda».
As Robert Parry notes, the US House of Representatives earlier this month acknowledged the true nature of the Kiev regime’s military units by passing an amendment that purports to withhold supplying American weapons to these paramilitaries, precisely because of their Neo-Nazi and racist ideology. That belated admission by US lawmakers has not been adequately explored in American public discourse.
For it alludes to the bigger and more self-incriminating fact that the Washington government, as well as its European allies, have unleashed these Neo-Nazi storm troopers in the heart of Europe to terrorise and murder civilians based on atavistic notions of «racial purity».
It is a sign of astounding denial or self-censorship that US politicians, media and pundits cannot openly engage with the flagrant facts.
Dylann Roof, the Charleston shooter, is not simply a deranged «lone wolf» with sickening, warped personal views. In his home state of South Carolina, there is in that state alone reckoned to be at least 16 white supremacist, Nazi, fascist organisations, according to an oblique mention in a New York Times report last week. That means that all across the US there are probably hundreds of such groups and thousands of gun-toting would-be foot soldiers.
Following the massacre at the black church in Charleston, President Obama said: «At some point it’s going to be important for the American people to come to grips with it, and for us to be able to shift how we think about the issue of gun violence collectively… this kind of mass violence doesn’t happen in other advanced countries». Obama went on to say that people need «to ask not just who did the killing but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers».
Obama’s words may sound as if they are searching. But they still don’t address the «system» that «produces the murderers».
Even less searching are Republican presidential contenders who equivocated shamefully about the Charleston massacre. None of them openly acknowledged the attack was «racial hatred». Rick Perry, Rick Santorium, Mike Huckabee and Rand Paul talked about the incident being «a drug-fuelled accident» motivated by «evil cowardice»that could have been prevented if the murdered churchgoers had themselves been armed with guns instead of just holding bibles.
The real sickness in American society is not simply that a 21-year-old Neo-Nazi white supremacist can go into a place of worship and gun down people who are praying. The real sickness is that American society, or at least its official public discourse, cannot face up to the reality that the kind of ideology and violence that its government sponsors in Ukraine is rampant in the midst of its own population.
If American leaders and media cannot deal with the glaring reality in their own midst, then it is little wonder that they continue to deny the same reality in Ukraine, where Neo-Nazi paramilitaries operate with American weaponry – in no less a way than Dylann Roof did on his murderous, hate-filled rampage in a Charleston church.
As the former black leader Malcolm X once said of the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 – «the chickens are coming home to roost». The violence that US government begets around the world is a continuum of the violence that resides in the heart of American society at home.

Counter-Propaganda: American Committee for East-West Accord

Propaganda Reigns In The West

Paul Craig ROBERTS | 24.06.2015 | 11:20

The lies about Russia and Russia’s president have grown so thick, threatening the world with devastating war, that distinguished Americans have formed the American Committee for East-West Accord. The members of the founding board are former US senator Bill Bradley, Jack Matlock who was US ambassador to the Soviet Union during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, William J. vanden Heuvel who was US ambassador to the UN during the Carter administration, John Pepper who is the former chairman and CEO of Proctor Gamble, Gilbert Doctorow who is a businessman with a quarter century of business experience with Russia, and professors Ellen Mickiewicz of Duke University and Stephen Cohen of Princeton University and New York University.
It is extraordinary that the cooperation between Russia and the US created over the decades by successive administrations, beginning with John F. Kennedy and culminating in the end of the Cold War with the Reagan-Gorbachev agreements, has been destroyed by a handful of American neoconservative warmongers in the past year and one-half. The achievement of a 40-year struggle wiped out overnight by a handful of insane warmongers who believe that Washington has a right to world hegemony.
The problem began with President Clinton violating the promises given to the Russians that NATO would not be taken into Eastern Europe. This breach of American promise was followed by the George W. Bush regime withdrawing from the Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty and changing US war doctrine to permit pre-emptive nuclear attack by the US on other countries, principally Russia.
These provocations were followed by announcement of US missile bases on Russia’s borders.
The Obama regime added a coup in Ukraine, long a province of Russia, and the establishment of a US vassal government that threatens Russian security.
In the past such provocations would have led, if not to war, at least to counter-provocations. However, Vladimir Putin is a cool and thoughtful character, a credit to the human race. He politely complains of the provocations, but continues to refer to Washington and the pseudo-governments of Washington’s vassal states as Russia’s «partners», even though he knows that they are Russia’s enemies.
Putin responds to threats, to illegal sanctions, and to incessant propaganda with statements that governments need to respect each other’s national interests and to work together for common benefit. No politician in the West speaks in this way. Western politicians, including non-entities such as Washington’s lapdog UK Prime Minister David Cameron, issue threats to Russia in violent language that make Adolf Hitler’s threats seem mild by comparison. Russia could destroy the UK in a few minutes, and we have the spectacle of the moronic British PM issuing threats to Russia despite the fact that the UK is not capable of bringing any meaningful force whatsoever with which to confront Russia. The lapdog Cameron relies on Washington, just as the moronic Polish government relied on the «British guarantee.»
The Washington morons think that they are isolating Russia, but what the fools are doing is isolating Washington and its vassals from the world. The large, important countries of Asia, Africa, and South America are allied with Russia, not with Washington. The BRICS--Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa--have created their own development bank and are conducting trade among themselves in their own currencies without use of the US dollar, the failing «world reserve currency».
Save the web address of the American Committee for East-West Accord http://eastwestaccord.com and keep up with their work. Do not rely on the presstitute media. Robert Parry recently described, accurately, the New York Times as Washington’s version of Big Brother’s (Orwell, 1984) «Two Minutes of Hate.»
Putin is the image that the presstitute NYTimes flashes on the screen to evoke the inculcated hate of «the enemy». The hate of the enemy keeps Washington’s wars going and conditions Americans to accept their own loss of liberty as habeas corpus, due process, and right to life crumble in front of their unseeing eyes, eyes blinded by propaganda.
At the just concluded St. Petersburg International Economic Forum to which I was invited but was unable to go, which I regret as I might have been introduced to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Putin gave believable assurances to a large array of foreign businesses present that Russia was committed to the rule of law and that their activities in Russia are safe. If you believe any of the propaganda fed to you by the Western presstitutes, including Bloomberg, about the «collapsing Russian economy», you can disabuse yourself of the lies by readingPutin’s account of the Russian economy.

The Western Coup in Ukraine May Self Destruct Yet

News | 25.06.2015 | 00:02
NEO – Western coup in Ukraine may self destruct yet
Jim W. Dean Ukraine is just another example of the massive destruction being ravaged upon millions of innocent civilian victims so Western sociopaths of all sizes and shapes can amuse themselves
The American-EU disaster brought upon poor Ukraine as a pseudo attack on Russia is not working out as planned. And neither did the Minsk agreement, which has been turned into an instrument of torture for the endlessly suffering Donbass people. The West fiddles as Donbass burns, as does Syria, under the grotesque American justification of “pursuing our interests”.
The ceasefire violations by Kiev, many done by its uncontrollable Nazi and Nationalist battalions, have unwittingly let loose an army of neo-Frankensteins upon the already victimized land, with 500 civilians killed so far. Lost in that statistic is an even sadder one, the 1500 civilians who are missing in Donbass areas controlled by Kiev during 2015.
That all seems to be kosher in the estimation of the coup puppets Western backers if Ukrainian forces engage in killing the Donbass people via shelling. But the recent arrests for looting, torture and rape show that there are some limits to the West’s depredations, even if for show only, as evidenced by the missing above which meets with total silence in the West.
Nationalist battalion arrests begin
The infamous Tornado battalion commander and eight of this men were arrested for such crimes. Their unit immediately mutinied on hearing they were to be disbanded, and they barricaded their base to defend against being forced to disband.
When Donbass was targeted for destruction by the West and Kiev, some of the independent battalions were formed by emptying out prisons and giving them weapons, with promises of looting, raping to teach the evil Russians a lesson. These hoodlums would become the future warlords of the conquered land, which it seems the banksters still want to hold as collateral for the IMF loans or purchase at fire sale prices as the economy crashes, with George Soros a the head of the line.
The second hammer to fall was the removal of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) director, Valentyn Nalivaychenko. He was an experienced official who had managed to avoid being tainted by the endless corruption scandals within the security organization, and who had been at odds with these renegade nationalist battalions. Most in the West are not aware he is a US citizen, with a real passport.
A comfortable majority in the factionalized Rada voted to remove him, and historically the SBU top staff is obliged to follow. But where will they go? Who will they side with in the next coup? It certainly will not be the Tornado battalion, despite the silly story about their 170 men headed to Kiev, all ex-convicts that the police and regular army units would love to shoot on sight.
If they are disbanded, they would no longer be under military law and punishment, but free to roam the countryside looking for any paymaster to put them back to work, and doing what to whom? This reminds me of the ancient saying, “Keep your friends close… and your enemies closer.”
Nalivaychenko proved this to be the case. Rather than going into hiding or keeping a low profile, he has already announced that he is considering running for the presidency. That takes some gall for someone just ridden out of town on the rail. But news reports prominently mentioned that he had a lot of foreign support. Presidential puppet candidates no longer come in sheep’s clothing.
The economic war rages on
The Minsk agreement continues its sleepwalk, but to what and where no one seems to know. Kiev has slowed its implementation down to a snail’s pace. The end game special status that Donbass wanted enshrined in the Ukraine constitution seems like a mirage now, all talk and no action. Although France and Germany guaranteed Kiev’s compliance in implementing the Minsk accords, they have literally done nothing to reign in Kiev’s ceasefire violations using the nationalist battalions.
This make-believe Minsk process is of course completely endorsed by the West. As General Breedlove told the wavering EU delegates at the Munich conference, he wanted them to help arm Kiev, despite knowing that it cannot defeat Donbass militarily, but to keep the war going in order “to give the sanctions against Russia time to work.” That goal has become as much a bad joke as Obama talking about Russia’s growing isolation.
Charlie Rose duels with Putin in the St. Petersburg arena
The recent St. Petersburg trade conference put a wooden stake in the heart of that fantasy. Billions of dollars in trade deals were signed, and over 2000 journalists attended. One of the highlights of the show was Charlie Rose hogging the microphone for what he thought was going to be his career highlight of whipping Vlad Putin in front of the world.
There is an wonderful American contribution to the English language that describes what happened. Putin ate Charlie Rose for lunch. His closing response to him was classic Putin in response to Rose’s attempt to put him on the defensive with Ukraine.
“Until the military and the so-called battalions – the armed nationalist formations – appeared on those territories, there were no weapons there. And there wouldn’t be any right now, if they tried to resolve the problem through peaceful means. Weapons appeared only after people started being killed by tanks, artillery, rocket launchers, combat aircraft. That’s when the resistance appeared. But as soon as someone undertakes an effort to resolve the conflict peacefully, the weapons will disappear,” Putin said.
Even little Crimea is laughing at Obama’s premature victory lap for isolating the entire Russian people and culture. “The West has already done everything which it could have done. They have tapped off water and imposed a transport blockade on Crimea. We have survived all that and continue developing – now in new economic realities. We have become even stronger over the past year,” said Crimean head Sergei Asyonov. Investors are flocking to Crimea, but having to work around the Western sanctions, something which has spawned a cottage industry in itself.
For Donbass things are much tougher. The economic blockade is hurting them. As Kiev sufferers economically, it wants to keep Donbass in worse shape, or Kiev would look ridiculous to its voters. In what was apparently an organized attack, one of the main gas trunk lines was shelled, which began undermining the entire pipeline pressure. If that pressure drops far enough, it will take months to repair, shutting down what local industry was still in operation.
My big worry is that this could have been a prelude to a summer offensive which a desperate Kiev might use as a diversion for its failures on the domestic front. The water supplies from Kiev-held territories are also blocked, ensuring that refugee populations will not be returning to their homes any time soon. But who would want to without a final resolution? There are no jobs to be had, so what would be the sense in returning?
Kiev general staff begins defecting to Donbass
Kiev is still a coup that has not really consolidated its power. The people trust this government less than the former. They know they were sold a bill of goods. Most are powerless but not all, like Kiev’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Major-General Alexander Kolomiets who defected to Donbass this week. He has this to say:
“The potential of the Ukrainian army is at a very low level. From a moral point of view, all the generals and officers who understand that the government’s actions are criminal, don’t want to fight. Only volunteers from nationalist troops are fighting. In the near future the Armed forces of Ukraine will be rocked by uprisings. Officers do not understand the commands to kill civilians. We will see it sometime in the fall. Everything will change very soon.”
While Kiev plays its waiting game, it is somewhat tied to that of the US and NATO, where the 6,000-man ready reaction force could be increase to 40,000 at the NATO conference next week. Four divisions is a major offensive move. Much of this force is headed to the Baltic States who have made a huge strategic blunder by offering themselves up for Western cannon fodder. The citizens there need some new and better leadership, and quickly, like most of the rest of us do.
Moscow is also buying time to complete its military modernization and to complete building with China and India the Eurasian integrated economic and military defensive Great Wall of Asia that will be able to defend itself via mutually assured destruction. Yes, the Western leaders are taking us backwards to that situation.
The last time they did this, it was the golden years for the US economy in which I grew up. Not so this time. Maybe the good citizens will finally grab their pitchforks and do what they need to do in time for our 2016 elections, where the next follow up step of the 9-11 coup is scheduled. These are dangerous times for us all indeed. We just have to make it that way for those who have brought this upon us, and give them their just reward, which is not the one they are looking for.

Germany, Italy, Japan and the UN Charter’s “Enemy State Clause”: Obstacle to an Asian and European Peace? For serious and indepth discussion (blogger)

EDITOR'S CHOICE | 24.06.2015 | 11:56

The UN Charter still designates Italy, Germany and Japan as enemy states to the United Nations. In legal terms this means that any U.N. Member State can launch a “preemptive” military aggression against these nations without a declaration of war. Seldom discussed, this enemy State status is today, arguably, one of the greatest obstacles for a lasting peace in Asia and in Europe.
Since the end of WW II none of the G-4, that is China, UK, USA, and the USSR / Russia have taken steps to abolish the Enemy State Clause from the Charter of the United Nations. The UN Charter still designates Italy, Japan and Germany as enemy States to the United Nations. This fact is generally omitted from the public political discourse; that is, both in the G-4 nations as well as in Italy, Japan and Germany.
The implications and the lack of the sovereignty (e.g. the jus ad bellum) are, arguably, one of the greatest obstacles with regard to achieving a lasting Asian and European peace. A few examples should amply demonstrate why.
Italy – Germany and Gladio
Both the Italian Brigate Rosse and the German Rote Arme Fraktion (RAF) were in part infiltrated by respectively Italian and West-German intelligence services before they were even formally established. In Germany the internal intelligence service of Berlin (Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz Berlin LfV Berlin) as well as the Federal Internal Intelligence Service (Bundesamt für Verfassungschutz – BfV) had infiltrated the later to be militarized left from the onset of the leftist student protest in the mid-60s.
To mention but one example; a LfV-Berlin agent, Peter Urbach, was one of the first to provide weapons and explosives to what later would develop into the militant 2. Juni and RAF. The situation with regard to Italy’s Brigate Rosse was similar. When German leftists went to Italy to help procuring weapons for the left in Greece that was prepared to take on the Greek military dictatorship, it became obvious that Italy’s police and Intelligence Services with ties to Italy’s Gladio network were well-informed and involved. (Statements by former members of Germany’s 2. Juni and RAF).
Some critics of the armed resistance would construe this fact as if the militant left was working on behalf of the intelligence services all along. Not true. What is true, however, is that the militant left was infiltrated from day one, and that some attacks were incited, other were allowed to happen, with intelligence services obstructing police investigations. Other attacks like the assassinations of von Herrenhausen and Rohwedder have, arguably, been carried out by NATO intelligence, while accusing the RAF or as in the case of von Herrenhausen the RAF as well as parts of the Lebanese Hezbollah which is known to be heavily infiltrated by the Israeli Mossad.
There exist today, serious and justified doubts whether Gladio networks were involved in the assassination of Deutsche Bank Director Alfred von Herrenhausen and Treuhand President Rohwedder. Von Herrenhausen lobbied for a more benign policy toward so-called third world nations and a partial debt moratorium. Rohwedder was, after the German reunification (shotgun wedding), actively inquiring into the mafia-style takeover of East German corporations by foreign entities.
So much to the information that slowly becomes part of the public discourse. What is being omitted, however, is that the domestic and foreign intelligence services of Italy and Germany, at top-levels and in part in the form of “factions with these services” still are heavily controlled by Washington and London.
The CIA and MI6 are playing a role, although the main thrust comes from the Pentagon, the JSOC-CIA interface and the JSOC / NATO interface. In Italy the 1978 kidnapping and assassination of Aldo Moroby an infiltrated Brigate Rosse cell prevented the formation of an Italian Cabinet with participation of Italy’s Communist Party. So much to Italian “sovereignty”.
One may ask whether an Italian or German government could act sovereign and so to speak “clean up” within their respective intelligence services. The answer is an unequivocal no; not as long as both States remain designated as enemy States to the UN.
The situation of German governments is further complicated by the fact that Germany still has no peace treaty and that Washington and London do all that is in their power to maintain that status quo. No post WW II government in Germany has dared to touch upon this “hot potato”, Red – Green coalitions included. Even The Left (Die Linke) avoids the issue as much as possible.
German governments have, generally speaking, used two strategies. 1) To push for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council to force the hands of the G-4. 2) To assert German power within the European Union; at considerable expense for the German economy in form of bail outs etc.
Relevance today?
Considering the situation in Ukraine and tensions between Russia and NATO / EU one cannot underestimate the fact that neither an Italian or German government could maintain a sovereign foreign policy. About 50% of Germans do not perceive Germany as solidly or permanently anchored within NATO and about 50% would like to see Germany maintain a neutral position as bridge between the east and the west, at equal distance and with equally good relations to respectively Moscow and Washington. No German government would be able to reflect this public opinion in its policy.
Japanese – US / Russian / Chinese Relations
Being designated as enemy State to the UN, Japan has to “dance on hot coals” too. There is a growing public consensus against US bases in Japan but no Japanese government could reflect this trend in tangible policies without risking serious implications. Any Japanese top-politician that would touch upon this issue would literally commit political hara kiri.
But it is not only the USA that keeps Japan in the legal limbo of being designated as enemy State. Japanese – Chinese relations with regard to the disputed Senkaku / Diaoyu Islands are strongly biased by Japan’s attempt to assert its sovereignty, even if it, at times reluctantly, has to play geopolitics and use the US against China.
The enemy State clause also has an impact on Japanese – Russian relations. The disputed South Kuril Islands (as Russian would call them) is one issue that is biased by the Japanese legal status as UN enemy State and the lack of a Japanese – Russian peace treaty. Japanese governments, at times reluctantly, have to play the US card against Russia. Russian – Japanese relations could, arguably, become far more positive if Russia took the initiative to level the playing field by signing a peace treaty.
Considering the developing Chinese – Russian relations and considering long-term geopolitical strategies in the Asia – Pacific region, a Russian and Chinese show of confidence in Japan as a partner would free the hands of Japan with regards to US – Japanese relations and be a wise move that would have positive repercussions throughout the region, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and Vietnam.
Taking the initiative to remove the enemy State clause and global leverage
Taking into account the complexity of today’s global markets; taking into account the complexity of today’s military alliances and interdependencies across so-called enemy lines, one can argue that any G-4 nation that takes the initiative to genuinely lobby for abolishing the enemy State clause from the UN Charter will gain a considerable political and geopolitical advantage.
With regard to both Russia and China such a step could, using tentative policies, also result in foiling the Anglo-American Axis’ hegemony in Europe and Washington’s Asia Pivot.
A joint Chinese – Russian initiative would also create far greater trust in countries like Vietnam and South as well as North Korea. A Russian initiative would create a more genuine discourse about the situation in Ukraine, NATO’s role with regard to Ukraine and the fact that Germany, and by implication the EU, are forced to “follow suit” and adhere to Washington’s dictates.
The Russian administration of President Vladimir Putin prides itself of being a proponent of a global community of interdependent but sovereign nation States. Taking the initiative with regard to the abolishment of the enemy State clause and a peace treaty with Japan could, arguably, be the most wise long-term investment that would secure that this vision can bear fruit and show that Russia’s position is genuine.
Ultimately, one must ask the question why non of the G-4 has yet taken the initiative
Is it a function of mistrust between cold-war and new-cold-war alliances? Or is it a conscious perpetuation of Yalta where the G-4 carved up the world into hegemonies, divided by Iron, Bamboo and Banana curtains?
If so, the invariable outcome will be that an increasing number of those States who have been subjugated and forced into these hegemonies, sooner rather than later, will rise against the G-4. Others, like Egypt, will note that the UN failed as much as the League of Nations, in protecting smaller nations from the conflicts that were unleashed during and after WW I & WW II. The trend to reform the UN or to abolish it all together is becoming increasingly prevalent.
Another invariable outcome of a continuation of Yalta in new drag will be that the seemingly endless string of low-intensity conflicts that is being fueled by the aftershocks of Yalta will continue while the G-4 position themselves and their power base, using people from Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East as cannon fodder and hostages.
