Charlie Hebdo’s stormtroopers

Natalia MEDEN | 24.01.2015 | 00:00

The terror attacks and the subsequent massive demonstration in Paris will pass into the annals of history, but the way the French capital looks these days will truly be something to remember for a long time to come. Starting at noon, Parisians flocked to the Place de la République to hear politicians speak in defense of freedom of speech after the Charlie Hebdo office was attacked and hostages were taken at a kosher deli. Paris had not seen anything like that in a long time. Although the city council was behind the meter-long signs reading «We are Charlie», many others were made by ordinary Parisians. Letter-size sheets of paper printed with the phrase «Je suis Charlie» («I am Charlie») hung from the doors of many stores and cafes. Some flower shops had spelled out these words in blooms. Someone was wearing a «Je suis Charlie» sign around his neck, and many others held homemade posters. The enthusiasm of those taking part in the demonstration, which drew about two million people, was genuine, people sang and waved French flags from their windows ...
...That day Paris was protesting the brutal execution of human beings in broad daylight. During the 13-year occupation of Afghanistan, France has lost 86 people, but here – only a half dozen had died over the course of two days. France was in shock - the sale of sedatives rose by 18% throughout the country. When thousands of people were dying somewhere in the Middle East or Ukraine, the French paid little notice - after all, they say, the people who live there can work it out themselves. But then the killings began in the center of Paris... And it’s true, the French feel responsible for their former colonies - although the immigrants arriving from those colonies are black, if they speak French, and especially if they call themselves Christians, the French accept them as their own. Those migrants are different from the Arabs, who do not renounce their Islamic faith and continue to raise their children in accordance with their own traditions – customs that are entirely alien to Europeans. In Europe this is called an «unwillingness to integrate.»
But generally speaking, integration does not require one to abandon one’s religion. Many mosques have been built in Europe, and there are political parties and organizations that represent the interests of Muslims. After landing at the airport in Berlin, almost always the first person one sees who is clearly not a passenger or airport employee is a Muslim performing his namaz on a mat. No one asks him to leave and pray at the mosque. Everyone «supports tolerance.»
The demonstration in the French capital was called a «March for Tolerance», but politicians began hiding behind this flag to play dubious games. Public opinion was diverted in such a way that the solidarity of people who were protesting terror now looked like blanket approval of the taunts made by the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists. This weekly magazine had a circulation of only 60,000 prior to Jan. 7 (and most of the demonstrators had never read it), but afterward it sold first five million, then seven million copies. And this was a very specialized publication. It specialized in ridiculing all religions, except one - Judaism.
However, not everyone in Europe agrees that licentiousness is necessarily an intrinsic quality of free speech. And even while advocating for the freedom to publish profane, anti-religious images, Charlie Hebdo also obeyed its own invisible censor. One letter on an Austrian internet forum at that time writes, «Insulting Muslims in the style of Shturmovik - because that’s what the Hebdo cartoons were like - seems completely normal to many people. But anti-Jewish cartoons would be considered anti-Semitic and that is something that is entirely taboo.» (1)
Europe is what it is. Some things can be said and written, but others cannot. Here is a recent example from another realm. A few days ago the Slovak conservative paper Dennik N lamented the European media’s mechanical opposition to the Alliance for the Family party’s campaign for a referendum against the expansion of rights for homosexuals and what are known as homosexual families. «I cannot share the views of the Alliance», wrote one journalist from that newspaper, which is seen as closely tied to the Catholic Church. «But they need to be allowed to express their opinion.» But even this timid statement offended an invisible but well-understood European idiosyncrasy - no one may dare to restrict homosexual propaganda, but if Catholics protest against the preaching of sin - that is an assault on freedom of speech!! An article immediately appeared in the same newspaper in which that author proclaimed, «I am Charlie, not the Alliance for the Family»! (2)
Speaking of tolerance, European politicians shamelessly exploit the prevailing atmosphere so they can conduct massive police operations against migrants. Raids have taken place in a number of European countries. And at the same time in France, for example, white people living in suburbs that are inhabited by immigrants have been dubbed «Gauls.» So should we be surprised that some of the «Gauls» are converting to Islam, and at times becoming the most zealous of his followers? Religion is the expression of a human relationship with God, but modern Europe is incapable of meeting man’s natural religious needs. The French Revolution abolished Christianity, proclaiming a «cult of reason», and modified its cathedrals to suit the needs of this atheistic cult, while issuing decrees banning Christian worship services and closing all churches. Europe has reached the point that it has refused to recognize Christianity as part of its own heritage: that article was removed from the final version of the Lisbon Treaty. Europeans are left with only an unwritten set of rules for «political correctness», which includes the right to freely promote homosexuality and the right to publicly ridicule religion.
And to top it all, European officials are restricting the freedom of those who would express their disagreement with the policies that are leading to the Islamization of Europe. So on January 19, citing security concerns, the city of Dresden banned a scheduled demonstration by the PEGIDA movement («Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West»), which is staging events each week. However, no ban was placed on the opponents of this movement, thus ensuring that on the day in question, PEGIDA opponents who gathered under their banners in various German cities would outnumber PEGIDA supporters. Those who have staked their bets on a «clash of civilizations», continue to destroy Europe, hastening her downfall ...

Russia and DPRK May Develop $20-30 Billion Power Grid Project

News | 24.01.2015 | 13:46

Sputnik — North Korea and Russia are reportedly in talks regarding a vast project aimed at modernizing the former's power grid, at a cost of an estimated $20-30 billion US, South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reports.
"North Korea and Russia are discussing the issue of modernizing and rebuilding a wide network of electricity transmission lines in North Korea. The scope of the project is an estimated $20-30 billion US," an unnamed Chinese source said to be informed on North Korean affairs told the newspaper.
The source also explained that in exchange, "Russia will receive access to rare earth metals in North Korea." The price for the metals would be calculated on the basis of international prices.
According to Chosun Ilbo, North Korea is also looking to obtain excess power supply from generating stations in the the Russian Far East. At present, North Korea faces a massive deficit in power supplies and generating capacity, with its aging transmission infrastructure compounding the problem and resulting in the loss of up to 60-70 percent of the capacity that does exist, Rossiyaskaya Gazeta has explained.
The Chinese source noted that the potential infrastructure project could be structured along the same lines as the large-scale railway infrastructure modernization projects that are presently being carried out between the two countries.
Chosun Ilbo notes that North Korea has sent specialists to Russia for talks on the supply and distribution of electricity supplies following last October's trip to the Amur Region by Re Su-Yong, the North Korea's Foreign Minister.

Last year, Russia and North Korea held joint talks on improving economic and trade cooperation along a wide number of trajectories, including the use of North Korean workers on development projects in Russia's Far East, and the possibility of Russian companies' participating in the Kaesong Special Economic Zone.

Rossiyskaya Gazeta notes that information about the possible electricity power grid infrastructure project, together with anticipation about Kim Jong-un's possible visit to Moscow for the upcoming Victory Day celebrations in May, has led to a growth in the share prices of South Korean companies which may also participate in the project. North Korea watchers believe that Kim's visit may lead to the signing of several large-scale cooperation projects, including the construction of a gas pipeline, power lines, and more railway projects on the Korean Peninsula.

New Saudi King Was Major Supporter of Al Qaeda Wayne MADSEN | 25.01.2015 | 00:00

"Shortly before his suspicious death in Scotland in 2005, former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook wrote in The Guardian that «Al Qaeda» was a CIA database of mercenaries, financiers, and interlocutors used by the CIA to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan: «Throughout the 80s he [Osama bin Laden] was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida [sic], literally 'the database,' was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahedin who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians»." Wayne Madsen*

New Saudi King Was Major Supporter of Al Qaeda

Wayne MADSEN | 25.01.2015 | 00:00

The new king of Saudi Arabia, Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud, the half-brother of King Abdullah, who died in his early 90s from complications from pneumonia, is expected to rule with a more Wahhabist-oriented religious bent and concentrate on limiting cautious political reforms started by Abdullah. Salman is also expected to devote his energies to increasing Saudi national security. Salman’s devotion to Saudi security is hypocritical at best due to his past support for Al Qaeda, including some of the individuals implicated in the 9/11 attack on the United States. It is Salman’s involvement with financing 9/11 and other terrorists that will likely reinforce the Obama administration’s refusal to declassify 28 missing pages from the 2002 Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on the intelligence failures surrounding the attack. As the then-governor of Riyadh, Salman’s name likely appears as a «big fish» in the redacted 28 pages from the Senate report.
On the surface, Salman will not govern much differently than his predecessor in affairs of oil politics and national security. Salman will be assisted by his son, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the minister of defense and the chief of the royal court. Mohammed was the chief adviser to his father when Salman served as the governor of Riyadh province. Prince Mohammed became defense minister when his father acceded to the throne upon the death of Abdullah.
The other chief adviser to Salman will be Mohammed bin Nayef, the minister of the interior since 2012 and the current deputy Crown Prince and Second Deputy Prime Minister. Nayef, a nephew of King Salman, is second in line to the throne after Crown Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz al Saud. Muqrin was the head of the Saudi Mukhabarat al-A’amah, the Saudi intelligence agency, from 2005 to 2012.
In 2006, Saudi democratic opposition leaders in Britain fingered Salman, the then-governor of Riyadh province, as providing material assistance to Al Qaeda forces operating in Afghanistan before and after 9/11. The opposition revealed that Al Qaeda members routinely traveled through Riyadh on their way to Pakistan and then to Taliban-ruled regions of Afghanistan. These Saudi insiders also reported that Salman's governor’s office arranged for cash payments, hotels, and air fares for the Al Qaeda members.
There is little doubt that Salman’s activities on behalf of Al Qaeda were known to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which approved of the Saudi pipeline of providing Arab guerrillas to Afghanistan’s mujahedin forces since the early days of Langley’s involvement in the jihadist campaign to oust Afghanistan’s socialist and secular government from power. Shortly before his suspicious death in Scotland in 2005, former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook wrote in The Guardian that «Al Qaeda» was a CIA database of mercenaries, financiers, and interlocutors used by the CIA to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan: «Throughout the 80s he [Osama bin Laden] was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida [sic], literally 'the database,' was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahedin who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians».
From the accounts of the Saudi opposition and Cook, it is inconceivable that Salman was unaware of the activities of his governor’s staff in Riyadh.
When a Saudi prince and a reputed relative of King Salman’s chief adviser Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, also named Nayef, was caught by France trafficking in cocaine in 1999, the Saudi Interior Ministry informed Paris in 2000 that if France brought criminal charges against the minor prince Nayef, a lucrative $7 billion radar defense contract, Project SBGDP («Garde Frontiere»), with the French firm Thales would be canceled. The details are found in a Confidential French diplomatic cable dated February 21, 2000. The subject of the cable was an audience between French officials and Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef in the case of a Saudi plane suspected of trafficking in narcotics («Prince Nayef, ministre saoudien de l'interieure. Affaire de l'avion saoudien soupçonne d'avoir servi a un traffic stupefiants.») The cable was sent by the technical adviser in the French ministry of the interior François Gouyette to the French justice ministry and the French embassy in Riyadh. Gouyette became the French ambassador to the United Arab Emirates in 2001.
The cocaine trafficked by Nayef was, according to a Confidential U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) document, being used to fund Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. The cash that was paid to terrorist recruits passing through Riyadh was obtained by the Interior Ministry from the drug proceeds coffers held in secret bank accounts. The CIA was aware of and encouraged the off-the-books payments to the Al Qaeda recruits, just as it is doing today with the Al Qaeda recruits being emptied from Saudi prisons and paid by Saudi government interlocutors.
In 1999, the DEA broke open a major conspiracy involving Prince Nayef’s Colombian cocaine smuggling from Venezuela to support some «future intention» involving Koranic prophecy. The DEA operations were contained in a «Declassification of a Secret DEA 6 Paris Country Office» memorandum dated June 26, 2000. In June 1999, 808 kilograms of cocaine were seized in Paris. At the same time, the DEA was conducting a major investigation of the Medellin drug cartel called Operation Millennium.
Through an intercepted fax, the Bogota Country Office of the DEA learned of the Paris cocaine seizure and linked the drug smuggling operation to the Saudis. The DEA investigation centered around Saudi Prince Nayef al Saud, whose alias was «El Principe» (the Prince). Nayef's full name is Nayef (or Nayif) bin Fawwaz al-Shaalan al-Saud. In pursuit of his international drug deals, Nayef traveled in his own Boeing 727 and used his diplomatic status to avoid customs checks. The DEA report stated Nayef studied at the University of Miami, Florida, owned a bank in Switzerland, spoke eight languages, was heavily invested in Venezuela’s petroleum industry, regularly visited the United States, and traveled with millions of dollars of U.S. currency. Nayef was also invested in Colombia's petroleum industry.
Nayef was also reported to have met with drug cartel members in Marbella, Spain, where the Saudi royal family maintains a huge palatial residence. The report states that when a group of cartel members traveled to Riyadh to meet Nayef, «they were picked up in a Rolls Royce automobile belonging to Nayef, and driven to the Riyadh Holiday Inn hotel. The next day they were met by Nayef and his brother [believed to be named Saul [sic] [His twin brother is Prince Saud. Nayef's older brother, Prince Nawaf, is married to King Abdullah's daughter].)… The second day they all traveled to the desert in terrain vehicles [hummers]. During this desert trip they discussed narcotics trafficking. UN [the DEA informant] and Nayef agreed to conduct the 2,000 kilogram cocaine shipment, which would be delivered to Caracas, VZ, by UN’s people, where Nayef would facilitate the cocaine’s transport to Paris, France. Nayef explained he would utilize his 727 jet airliner, under Diplomatic cover, to transport the cocaine.
Nayef told «UN» that he could transport up to 20,000 kilograms of cocaine in his jet airliner, and propositioned «UN» to conduct 10-20,000 kilogram shipments in the future. «UN» wondered why Nayef, supposedly a devout Muslim, would be involved with drugs. Nayef’s response in light of what is now known about Saudi funding of terrorism, is worth a close perusal. During the Riyadh meeting, Nayef responded to «UN’s» question by stating that «he is a strict advocate of the Muslim Corran [sic].» «UN» stated, «Nayef does not drink, smoke, or violate any of the Corran’s [sic] teachings.» «UN» asked Nayef why he [Nayef] wanted to sell cocaine and Nayef stated that the world is already doomed and that he had been authorized by God to sell drugs. Nayef stated that «UN» would later learn of Nayef’s true intentions for trafficking narcotics although Nayef would not comment further. The Saudi prince’s drug smuggling operation was smashed by the DEA and French police in October 1999.
Drug money laundering in support of Al Qaeda terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a strict interpretation of the Koran in the future governance of Saudi Arabia, the return of the feared religious police, the «mutaween», and a crackdown on legitimate internal dissent in Saudi Arabia: this is the legacy and governance style that King Salman brings to Saudi Arabia.

A very courageous and impressive speech
A speech by Rania Masri, the keynote speaker, during the ‘Texas For Gaza’ protest on August 2, 2014 in Austin Texas. (Note that the recording missed the first few seconds. She began it by saying that “Yesterday, the Obama administration said that the abduction of the Israeli invading soldier by the Palestinian Resistance was a “barbaric act”.)
